Galva Wins Grant for Summer Music Series

Levitt Foundation

The votes are in, and Galva has won a 25,000 dollar grant from a national foundation to help pay for this year's summer music series. This week, the Mortimer and Mimi Levitt Foundation announced the 15 winners, following online voting in November.

One of the organizers of the Galva voting, and upcoming festival, is John Taylor. He says the money will help them bring in more, and bigger acts. Ordinarily, residents of rural areas and small towns have limited access to live performers.

"To be able to have those acts come to Galva, and for the concerts to be free and family friendly - it's really a rare thing."

But it's not a done deal yet - Galva must match the Levitt Foundation Grant - half in cash and the rest in cash and in-kind donations. To donate, contact the Galva Arts Council.

Taylor hopes to have the local match raised by early March so he can begin signing performers for the summer series - beginning on May 27th, it will be held on every Sunday for 10 weeks.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
