'Talking Art' With Kelly Lao & Colleen Tomlinson

The German American Heritage Center and the Creative Arts Academy of the Quad Cities have collaborated on their third annual giant advent calendar.

It will be displayed until January 8, 2018 in the ornate windows of the German American Heritage Center at 712 W. 2nd Street in Davenport.

Seventh grade students from the Creative Arts Academy created the 24 distinct holiday images. Twelve windows on the second and fourth floors each contain two of the images, with a new one revealed daily at 4 p.m. through December 24. The windows are back-lit at night for easy viewing.

Learn more about the origins of the advent calendar in Germany in the 19th century, and the inspiration behind the project organized by the German American Heritage Center.

You can also learn about the Creative Arts Academy and how their 6th through 12th grade students’ school curriculum is enriched by a career oriented foundation in the arts. Classes are held at the Davenport Public Library, and students from other school districts can open enroll.
