Call for Volunteers to Promote the Arts in Dubuque

Now that Dubuque has adopted an Arts and Culture Master Plan, it's time to implement it. Monday city residents are invited to a meeting to organize several task forces.

Dubuque's Arts and Cultural Affairs Coordinator, Debra Alleyne, says city leaders decided to put together a master plan after a study showed arts and culture have a 47 million dollar impact on the local economy, and provide more than 1,100 jobs.

"We all know that cities with a thriving arts and cultural scene, arts and entertainment, tend to draw and retain young talent more."

The master plan is the result of about two years of meetings, surveys, and focus groups.

The five task forces will focus on: public art and infrastructure; accessibility, engagement, and inclusion; artists and entrepreneurship; capacity and investment; and branding and communication.

Monday's meeting begins at 4 pm, at the Five Flags Center.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
