Muscatine Art Center Fundraising for Renovation Project

The Muscatine Art Center is raising money to make sure the 18,000 pieces in its collection will be preserved and cared for in the future. Through next month, the center is holding its campaign called, "Framing the Future," to finish a $2.1 million renovation project.

Director, Melanie Alexander, says the Muscatine Art Center includes four buildings-- with the oldest dating back to 1908. And, the last major renovation was done in the 1980s.

Alexander says a conservation study done three years ago proved the center needed an upgrade.
She says the main goal is to make sure the art center has adequate temperature and humidity control, so that none of the art pieces are damaged. And, the renovation also includes roof repairs and improvements to exhibition spaces.

Alexander says construction began in May, and the Muscatine Art Center is now partially closed.

She says while the historic house has been closed, the Figge Museum in Davenport has displayed some of Muscatine's collection.

The Muscatine Art Center has $350,000 left to raise for its "Framing the Future" campaign, which has been helped by an anonymous donation of $100,000. The Muscatine Art Center says it will match every donation dollar-for-dollar until October 24th.

Alexander says the renovation project should be completed by the end of February (2017).
