What to do with holiday waste

Waste Commission of Scott County

Christmas trees, string lights, wrapping paper, holiday cards, and more...research shows that Americans produce more waste during the holidays.

In Scott County, lots of that holiday waste can be recycled.

Scott County Waste Commission Spokeswoman Rachel Evans says only some of it can be left on the curb.

"Plain wrapping paper, like as long as it doesn't have any glitter or metallic foil, broken down cardboard boxes, empty wrapping paper tubes, the paper gift and shopping bags, tissue paper, greeting cards and envelopes, newspapers, magazines, all your normal recyclable things that are pictured on the cart, as well as popcorn and cookie tins, can all be recycled curbside."

String lights, batteries, and electronics are considered e-waste, and can be dropped off at the Electronics Recovery Center in Davenport.

Evans says some common Christmas items, like artificial Christmas trees, can NOT be recycled.

"A big one that we deal with actually all year is styrofoam, so we don't have an outlet for that locally, so that should just be thrown into the trash," she said. "Things like bows and ribbons can be reused again, but they cannot be recycled."

"Also plastic bags, everybody seems to be making those last minute grocery store visits, and you forgot your reusable bags, those plastic bags can be recycled at a retailer, but should not be recycled in your cart."

Information about recycling in Scott County is online.
