Mitchell says the deal will save the island an average of nearly $56,000 a year. It will also build on partnerships the garrison already has with local fire departments to respond to emergencies and provide backup and support.
The new agreement includes maintenance of roughly 140 emergency radios and three base stations. Mitchell says the island's fire department employs 44 firefighters.
It's the fourth agreement the arsenal has signed with local governments.
The City of Rock Island has taken over water, sewer, and electrical services for the garrison, along with operation and maintenance of street lights and traffic signals.
It also has agreements with Rock Island and Moline for residential trash and recycling pickup.
And Arsenal Island has a deal with Rock Island County for 9-1-1 phone services.
