Possible changes to 2nd Avenue in downtown Rock Island.

Residents of Rock Island can help redesign the downtown. Tuesday night, the city will hold a community meeting to get public comments on more than seven million dollars worth of proposed improvements.

Spokeswoman, Sarah Hayden, says the city and the Rock Island Downtown Alliance have worked with two design and engineering firms. The possible improvements would be for the Downtown Historic District from 1st to 4th Avenue and from 15th to 21st Street.

One possible change would be to the pedestrian mall on 2nd Avenue.

"Well one of the major ideas that will be implemented is that pedestrian mall will be removed and it will still be some type of walkway, it will be turned into a street, but a curbless street and the sidewalks will be 30 feet wide."

Another proposal is for a gateway arch leading into the downtown across 1st Avenue from Schwiebert Riverfront Park.

"So it will say 'Welcome to Rock Island' and the year that Rock Island was founded, which is 1841, and I think it adds a visual element that we lack in that downtown space."

Proposals also include a dog park on 21st Street on land donated by Illinois Casualty Company, plus landscaping, decorative lighting, and public art installations.

Tuesday night's meeting will be held from six to eight pm at the Holiday Inn in downtown Rock Island.
