MidAmerican Will Ask for Gas Delivery Rate Increase

MidAmerican Energy wants to raise rates for its Iowa customers. Next week it will submit a request to the Iowa Utilities Board for a 6 per cent increase in one part of the bill - what customers pay for the delivery of natural gas.

Company spokesman Geoff Greenwood says, if approved, the average monthly gas bill would go up nearly 5 dollars.

"We have not asked for a rate increase since 2002. It's been 20 years of making sure that we keep all of our costs in check. We try to keep things affordable for our customers."

And while the request is pending, MidAmerican is allowed to raise rates on an interim basis - the result would be a hike in monthly bills of about 5 per cent, or $2.81.

Public meetings about the request will be held around Iowa, starting in late July, including in Davenport on July 31, Cedar Rapids on August 1st, and a virtual meeting on August 3rd.

The company has 611,000 customers in Iowa, and a final decision by the board could take up to 11 months.

This would not affect Illinois customers.
