The Iowa Utilities Board has scheduled a hearing in July for a proposal to build an underground, high voltage transmission line.

The Soo Green electrical line would run from Mason City, Iowa to Plano, Illinois, crossing the Mississippi River north of the Quad Cities.

Canadian Pacific Railway is a partner in the project because the transmission line would be installed underground, along train tracks and highways in Iowa.

Nearly three years ago, Soo Green held an online public meeting about the proposal. The company said its customers would be charged to access the line. But ratepayers in Iowa would not be charged at all. And customers in other power markets would pay to use the line.

Soo Green needs a permit from the Iowa Utilities Board. And it's been working on franchise agreements for routes in 24 cities.

The Iowa Utilities Board hearing will hold a two-day hearing about the Soo Green proposal on July 11th and 12th in Elkader.
