Moline Looks to Redesign Downtown Future

As Moline works on plans for the future of the downtown, it's asking residents for help.

A community open house was held last week for feedback on a new type of building code.

Ryan Hvitløk, Community and Economic Developent Director, says residents were mostly focused on maintaining walkability, and the traditional look of downtown. But he says developers want more specific guidance on how to win approval for future projects.

"It will be a very clearly defined code. Lots of illustrations, lots of pictures. Really to kind of help guide that development community of what's expected by our community when you develop in our downtown. How to get through the process as quickly as possible."

He says one goal of the project is to create long-lasting and beautiful spaces downtown, but overall the focus will be on what the community wants.

"At the end of the day it really is the residents' community. And we want to ensure that whatever comes out of this process has been well vetted by the community, will work for our development community, and will create the downtown that our residents can be proud of."

Public comments will be accepted until the end of February on the city's website. Hvitløk says one of the first projects that follows the new code will likely be the former Riverstone Group headquarters on 5th Avenue.
