With help from Iowa State University, John Deere wants to learn how large grain farmers can protect the environment and still make money.

Senior Staff Engineer, Andrew Greenlee, from the company's Sustainability Solutions Team, says they'll use eight, ten-acre fields to test four tillage methods for corn and soybeans - from conventional tillage to no-till with cover crops.

"So instead of doing smaller research plots that you may see at a university, the ten acres are more of being able to show full-scale equipment running across the operation."

They hope to learn how farmers can improve their use of fertilizers and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

"Looking at how we can help a farmer use every drop, every seed, and get the most economics of it with having the lowest environmental impact. So building that soil health, building organic matter in the soil, and reducing runoff."

Iowa State faculty and students will help Deere during this five-year project.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
