This weekend, members of the Tri City Jewish Center will open a window into their past.

Gary Segal serves on its Historical Archive Committee. He says in 1935, a group of Jewish men from four different synagogues in the Quad Cities decided to create a place where all members could gather and host social activities. So the next year, the group bought the Buford mansion on 7th Avenue in Rock Island, which is now the home of Word of Life church. And in 1949, the center built on to the mansion.

That's when the Jewish center created a time capsule and placed it in a cornerstone "for the benefit of future generations." The contents will include memorials and copies of the center's newspaper.

The Tri City Jewish Center recently moved to Davenport and shares a building with Temple Emmanuel and the local Jewish federation. Segal says some items from the time capsule will be incorporated into a display wall highlighting the history of all the Quad Cities synagogues.

The Tri City Jewish Center and Word of Life will celebrate the opening of the time capsule on Sunday at 12:30 pm.
