Primary Election Result Could Change

A close race in Tuesday's Democratic primary in the Quad Cities may not be decided for two weeks.

In the race for Illinois House District 72, Gregg Johnson beat Thurgood Brooks by 28 votes, or three-tenths of one per cent.

Rock Island County Clerk Karen Kinney says 162 mail ballots from Democrats in the 72nd District have not yet been returned, but they could count when the results are certified if they were postmarked by election day.

"I know some of the candidates are going to be on pins and needles for the next two weeks wondering how those vote-by-mail ballots are going to change their numbers. We'll just have to wait and see."

The county's electoral board will meet on July 14th.

Kinney says some of the 162 may not have been returned because people decided instead to vote in person Tuesday, or for some reason they didn't vote.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
