After almost five months, the new I-74 Bridge bike and pedestrian trail is open.

The city of Moline says there was a "soft opening" today, with an official ceremony possible sometime soon.

Quad Cities Bike Club member Dean Mathias says the bridge trail will make commutes easier.

"I think the best thing is, is that it opens a connectivity line between Iowa and Illinois. We've had the Centennial Bridge and we've had the Government Bridge, but it will allow more people to commute to work without having to go all the way down to Rock Island and come back around."

Mathias hopes the Quad Cities will eventually have "one huge loop" for bicyclists and pedestrians. He says this bridge is a gamechanger and a model for other communities.

"On a scale of one to 100, 100 being top, it's about 1,000 as far as I'm concerned."

Officially, the bridge trail will open to the public by Saturday. For updates on the project, visit I74RiverBridge.com.
