King Center Hosts Annual Memorial Service and Celebration

The King Center in Rock Island will host its 39th Annual service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday (1/17). The center had hoped to host an in-person event, but due to the recent surge in COVID-19, it will be virtual.

Executive Director Jerry Jones says the annual event celebrates King's dream, and how to build a stronger community.

"The outcome from this event is to energize our community by showing itself, by the community being inspired by some of the people that are doing hard, good work to make this a better place to live."

The center will also announce this year's "I Have A Dream" Award, which is given to a resident of Rock Island who has helped the community.

"It's validation, recognition for the hard work that they have put in to our community and that's really important. It provides awareness as well, often times after such events the efforts or service they're providing are on going they'll receive a lot of attention, support, or help."

Jones invites everyone to watch the service on Monday from 10:30 am to noon. It can be livestreamed on YouTube (MLK Center Rock Island) and Facebook (facebook.com/MLKCenterRockIsland), and a recording will also be available later on both websites.
