Free Holiday Meals Available

Free meals are once again available to help residents of the Quad Cities celebrate Thanksgiving.

For the 32nd year, the King Center in Rock Island is offering free meals, but instead of serving inside, they're only available for delivery or curbside pickup because of the pandemic. Meals are available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 am until 3 pm.

The King Center "served" 2,000 meals in 2019, 3,000 last year, and is hoping to reach 5,000 free meals this year.

On Tuesday (11/23), Friendly House in Davenport will hold its annual community Thanksgiving meal, but because of COVID will limit attendance to 75 (signups were accepted last week). The sponsor is the Davenport Noon Optimist Club.

And of course next Thursday, Bob Vogelbaugh will hold his 51st Community Dinner. It's a drive-through event again this year because of the pandemic. Everyone is welcome to pick up a free meal on Thanksgiving at SouthPark Mall in Moline, from 4 to 6 pm.

Last year he and his volunteers served more than 3,200 meals.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
