Talking Art with Steve Grismore

“Big Fun” is a 6-piece band playing funk, soul, and jazz fusion from the 1960’s and 1970’s, including music by Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, the Jazz Crusaders, James Brown, and more, and make no mistake - they are a whole lot of fun! On Sunday, July 18, 2021 the band will be performing from 5-7 PM at the Redstone Room in River Music Experience in Davenport. Thanks to Polyrhythms’ Third Sunday Jazz Workshop & Matinee Series, high quality jazz performances are brought to the Quad Cities every month.

The band includes Steve Grismore on guitar, Bob Washut on piano, Christopher Merz on saxophone, Mike Conrad on trombone, Danny Oline on bass and Tim Crumley on drums. Each of these musicians are “composers, arrangers, improvisers, educators, explorers, and music lovers who have played, in many genres, engagements and festivals all over the world” and individually, are masters on their respective instruments.

Listen to the conversation here with guitarist, composer, and educator Steve Grismore about his 50-year career in music, his role as an educator at the University of Iowa as well as numerous other academic institutions (including both Augustana College and Black Hawk College in the Quad Cities), and his hopes for the Iowa City Jazz Festival which he co-founded in the early 1990’s.

Admission to the concert on July 18, 2021 is $15. You can reserve a seat or table by calling Polyrhythms at (309) 373-0790 or emailing nate@polyrhythms.org. Tickets are also available for purchase at the door, which opens at 4:30 PM. River Music Experience is located at 129 N. Main St. in Davenport.
