Second Offer for RI School

A second offer has been made to buy a former school in Rock Island. This afternoon, Joe Lemon Junior released a copy of his proposal to buy Audubon School. He and his family have restored some historic buildings in the Quad Cities, and earlier this month said they might be interested in the property on 18th Avenue.

The Rock Island School District has already accepted an offer from Fareway Stores which would like to buy the property, demolish the 90 year old school, and open a new grocery store, but some neighbors are opposed.

Lemon says his offer is "substantially the same" as Fareway's - setting the purchase price at $475,000. And that his intended uses include "residential housing, office, storage, retail, commercial, and school uses."

So far, both the Preservation Commission and Planning Commission have rejected Fareway's proposal for Audubon. The city council has scheduled a special meeting for next Monday (6/24) to talk about the school and its future. The school closed in 2010.
