From June 10 to July 26 Davenport Community Schools will serve free breakfast and lunch at various locations.

The Davenport Community School District is joining the 2024 Summer Food Service Program, which offers free meals to children 18 and under.

"You don't have to be a Davenport community member; you can come from anywhere," Christa Andersen, Davenport Community School District Field Specialist, said. "[There] is no income eligibility, so anyone ages one to eighteen can eat our free meals."

Andersen says those interested can find the locations, times and menus on the Davenport school district's website. According to Andersen, indoor sites are open starting June 17th.

Andersen says the meals offered are nutritious to kids.

"We offer chicken patties. Papa John's pizza on Mondays. We offer chicken nuggets; hot dogs are always a favorite," Andersen said in an interview with WVIK at the Lincoln Center in Davenport. "We're offering fresh fruits and vegetables with most of our meals, so we're really excited about that."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is funding the program, and according to Andersen, the turnout this summer will dictate the budget for next year.

"The more kids we get, the more we can keep our programs opening, so we're really encouraging all of our families to come out and take advantage of this program," Andersen said.

Davenport Community School District employees Nick Braybant, driver, and Heather Eaker, lunch lady, were on site Tuesday afternoon to hand out meals to kids. Eaker says their first stop of the day had around 40 kids grabbing a free meal.
