The Celebration Belle travels upstream on the Mississippi River near the new, I-74 bridge. This view is from the path along the riverfront in Bettendorf, Iowa.

After testing it over the last month, the decorative lighting system on the new, I-74 bridge is "good to go."

That's according to Pete Sambor who is the US Coast Guard's Federal Project Officer for new construction.

He got feedback from barge captains and others who use the Mississippi River, to make sure they could safely travel under the bridge. Twenty-six different lighting displays, or configurations, were tested. And Sambor says he received no complaints or reports of problems.

Towboat captains and others have the option of turning off the decorative lighting if necessary. Sambor says they use a radio-based, remote system, and the colored lights come back on automatically.

The decorative lighting on the I-74 bridge between Bettendorf and Moline is completely separate from the navigation channel lighting system.

Sambor will now request final comments from the captains and navigation industry officials then submit a final report about the results.
