National Cemetery

Even though the annual Memorial Day ceremony will not be held, the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island will be open this weekend. It will be open for visitors from 8 am until 8 pm Saturday through Monday. 

Although no formal ceremony will be held Friday, First Army, based on Arsenal Island, will celebrate an important anniversary - for itself and for the nation. It's V-E Day, the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, and First Army played a key role in that victory.

Veterans Day Events

The Marching Maroons band from Moline High School will play for veterans at the annual Veterans Breakfast at HyVee, 4218 Avenue of the Cities, from 7:30 to 8 am on Monday. The band will also play at 9 am during a flag raising ceremony at the John Deere Seeding Group, 501 River Drive, in Moline.

The commanding general of First Army is leaving. On Thursday, during a "relinquishment of command ceremony" on Arsenal Island, First Army will say good-bye to Lieutenant General Stephen Twitty.

One of the commands based on Arsenal Island is preparing to celebrate its centennial. First Army was formed in 1918, and its headquarters moved to the Quad Cities in 2011.

First Army

On Friday, a new leader will take over First Army. At a change of command ceremony on Arsenal Island, Major General Stephen Twitty will become the 38th commanding general.

Twitty comes to First Army from Fort Bliss, Texas, where he served as commanding general of the lst Armored Division and the Army Garrison.
