After being cancelled last year, hundreds of go-karts will take to the streets this Labor Day weekend.

Billed as the largest street race in the world, the Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix will cordon off several blocks of downtown Rock Island, where racing teams from across the country will hit speeds approaching 100 miles per hour.

Roger Ruthhart is the head organizer for the Grand Prix. He says the event has served as a jumping-off point for some great racers over the years.

"Five of our previous competitors have raced in the Indianapolis 500. Scott Speed was the last American to race in Formula One. It's an opportunity really to see some great racing in the sport itself, and also perhaps the beginning of a career for some star of the future."

Ruthhart says the Grand Prix struggled to re-group after COVID restrictions and cancellations last year, but the competition looks good for this weekend.

In addition to the main races, spectators can enjoy a cornhole tournament, a meeting with the Quad Cities Storm, and a variety of businesses around the course in downtown Rock Island.

Admission is free, and the event kicks off at 1 PM on Saturday and continues through Sunday.
