Lake Storey closed after diesel fuel leak

Enjoy Illinois

Lake Storey is closed after a diesel fuel leak last week in Galesburg.

City officials say the fire department responded to a call about a fuel leak near South Lake Storey on Thursday afternoon. Diesel fuel from a nearby building was leaking into a creek that flows into Lake Storey.

The site is owned by the Illinois Department of Central Management Services.

The Galesburg Fire Department contained the spill using "large absorbent booms." Officials say the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency confirmed the leak had been stopped. The state also hired an environmental contractor.

The lake is temporarily closed to all water activity to prevent visitors and their pets from being exposed to contaminated water.
