Nick Weist Memorial Highway Dedication

St. Rep. Dan Swanson

A deputy sheriff who lost his life in the line of duty will be honored this weekend. Saturday local and state officials will dedicate the Deputy Sheriff Nick Weist Memorial Highway - a section of Highway 150 from Alpha to Galesburg.

In April of last year, the 34 year old Weist, of Viola, was setting up spike strips south of Alpha when a car that was being chased by police hit and killed him.

The honor for Weist was approved by the Illinois General Assembly, and sponsored by Representative Dan Swanson of Alpha and Senator Mike Halpin of Rock Island.

The suspected driver of the car, 24 year old Daylon Richardson, faces murder and other charges, and is scheduled to go on trial in Henry County in October.

The dedication ceremony will be held in AlWood Elementary School, in Alpha, on Saturday at 11:45 am.
