Healthy Aging Month: Preventing Urinary Tract Infections

Ways To Subscribe

Can cranberry juice prevent a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)? Cranberries contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that make it harder for bacteria to stick to your bladder. However, research is still needed to determine the exact amount and how often you should consume it to make a difference. There are other ways to help prevent a UTI, including:

  • Staying hydrated. Men should be drinking 3.7 liters daily and women should be drinking 2.7. This may change slightly depending on age and if you have other diseases that affect fluid status, so be sure to talk to your health care provider if you have questions.
  • Maintain proper hygiene. For women, make sure to wipe front to back and never reuse a wipe when using the restroom.
  • Don’t hold urine. Emptying the bladder regularly and completely reduces bacterial growth.
  • Wear breathable clothing. Cotton underwear and loose-fitting pants can help keep the area dry, reducing bacterial growth.
  • Limit bladder irritants. Reducing caffeine, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners may help, since they can irritate the bladder.
  • Manage underlying conditions. Keeping diabetes and other chronic conditions under control can lower risk.

This week try consuming the recommended intake of fluid that’s right for you to help flush bacteria from your urinary tract and lower your risk of a UTI.
