Summer Skin Care and Nutrition for Healthy, Glowing Skin

Ways To Subscribe

Good morning! This is your wellness wake up call with University of Illinois Extension.

Summer sunshine can do wonders for your mood—but your skin needs a little extra care during the warmer months. Between sun exposure, sweat, and outdoor activities, your skin works hard all summer long. Keep your skin healthy with the following skincare habits.

Hydration is key. Hot weather increases your risk of dehydration, which can leave your skin dry or irritated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and snack on hydrating foods like cucumbers and watermelon.

Protect your skin from UV damage. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day—even on cloudy days if you will be outside for prolonged periods of time. Reapply every two hours if you're swimming or sweating. Don’t forget often-missed spots like your ears, and feet.

Eat for skin health. Foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, help fight skin-damaging free radicals caused by sun exposure. Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and flaxseeds help reduce inflammation while Vitamin C-rich foods like citrus and bell peppers, aid in collagen production, keeping skin firm and smooth.

Go easy on heavy makeup and opt for non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) products when possible. This means they won’t clog your pores. Use gentle cleansers to remove sweat and sunscreen buildup and moisturize regularly. Aloe is a great option for after-sun care.

This week, combine smart sun habits with a skin-supportive diet, so you can enjoy a summer glow that’s more than just skin deep.
