Dining Out with Food Allergies: Tips to Staying Safe

Good morning. This is your Wellness Wake-Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.

This month, we have been discussing food allergies, and today's focus is navigating challenges when eating away from home.

Food allergies are not only life-threatening, they are also life-altering. People with food allergies must be vigilant to avoid foods they are allergic to.

Eating away from home presents additional challenges and can cause anxiety. However, with some planning and effective communication, one can enjoy dining out while minimizing risks.

1. Research restaurants. Before heading out, look online to find allergy-friendly restaurants. Review the menu or call to ask specific questions about their allergy protocols and food options.

2. Communicate with staff. Let staff know about your food allergy and ask detailed questions about how they handle allergens to prevent cross-contact in the kitchen.

3. Be polite but firm. If waitstaff cannot answer your questions, politely request to speak with the manager or person in charge to ensure accurate information.

4. Avoid uncertain foods. Do not order if a restaurant cannot provide a complete list of the food ingredients or if their process does not inspire confidence.

5. Be prepared. Carry an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) or any other necessary allergy medication wherever you dine out.

Bringing awareness to the challenges faced by individuals with food allergies is essential for fostering a safe dining experience for all. This week, take a minute to learn more about food allergies and how you can support those who navigate them daily.
