Good morning, this is your Wellness Wake Up Call with University of Illinois Extension.
Osteoarthritis (OA) can make movement painful, but staying active is one of the best ways to manage symptoms and improve overall joint health. While it may seem counterintuitive, regular exercise helps reduce stiffness, strengthen muscles that support the joints, and improve flexibility, ultimately leading to less pain and better function.
Low-impact exercises are ideal for people with OA. Walking, swimming, cycling, and water aerobics put minimal stress on the joints while keeping the body active. Strength training, using light weights or resistance bands, helps build muscle around affected joints, providing better support and stability. Flexibility exercises such as yoga or gentle stretching can help maintain a full range of motion and ease stiffness.
It’s essential to start slow and listen to your body. Warming up before exercise and cooling down afterward can prevent strain. If any activity causes sharp pain, it’s a sign to modify the movement or take a break. Consulting a physical therapist or doctor can help create a personalized exercise plan tailored to your needs.
In addition to structured workouts, simple lifestyle changes like standing up regularly, taking short walks, and performing daily stretches can make a big difference. Even household activities like gardening or dancing can contribute to staying active.
This week, be consistent with your exercise routine so you can stay active in a way that feels good and supports long-term joint health.
Thank you for listening! I hope you have a happy and healthy day ahead. This has been Kristin Bogdonas, nutrition and wellness educator for University of Illinois Extension.
