I-80 Re-opened in Henry County

A section of Interstate 80 in western Illinois was closed for nearly 12 hours Wednesday, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

According to the state police, a truck carrying 8,000 gallons of ethanol crashed, and caught fire, about 3 am near Annawan. Eastbound and westbound lanes were closed until the fire was put out, then stayed closed for cleanup by hazardous materials teams.

Traffic was diverted onto Highway 6, between exits 27 and 33.

By midday one westbound lane had re-opened, and at 2:45 pm, state police announced all four lanes were open again for traffic.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
