Galesburg City Council to Address Lead in Water

Credit CDC

The Galesburg City Council will formally discuss the issue of lead in drinking water Monday night. Aldermen and the Knox County Health Department will hold a work session and brainstorm ways to improve the city's water.

City Engineer, Wayne Carl, says last year, a small water sample showed some homes had higher levels of lead than the federal standard. So, Galesburg is now required to do more lead tests each year.

But, Carl says water is not the only problem. This month, the Associated Press released a report showing an unusually high number of children suffer from lead poisoning in Galesburg and Knox County.
Carl hopes future sessions will include the US EPA, to work towards reducing high blood levels of lead in local children.

The Galesburg City Council will meet at 5:30 pm Monday, to discuss lead hazards and possible solutions.
