Artists, chefs, and students are turning empty bowls into full stomachs this week. Today, Moline High School is selling decorative bowls and a hot meal, to raise money for the Quad Cities Student Hunger Drive.
Joel Ryser, with the Moline High School Art Department, says this is the sixth annual Empty Bowls Project. Artists and professionals from Augustana College, rotary clubs, and other organizations create and donate clay bowls. Then, people can purchase them, along with soup and other food from 20 different restaurants.
Moline High School faculty and students from the Interact Club and National Honor Society help serve and clean up. And since the Empty Bowls Project began, students have raised $20,000 for hungry people in the community.
Ryser says it's a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
He says students raise about $5,000 every year. And the money collected will be used to purchase canned goods for the Student Hunger Drive that ends next month.
The Empty Bowls Project runs from 5 to 7 tonight, in the Moline High School Cafeteria. The suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
