The city of Bettendorf has decided to replace its street lights to save energy and money. During the next two months, more than 18-hundred high pressure sodium lights will be replaced with LED bulbs.
City Administrator Decker Ploehn says replacing the lights all at once, rather than one-at-a-time as they burn out, will save the city $47,000 a year.
The savings will pay for the replacement cost within four years. And the LED lights are expected to last for 15 years, compared to just 5 years for high pressure sodium lights.
In addition, Ploehn says LED lights provide better quality light.

Beginning ten years ago, Bettendorf converted its downtown street lights and traffic lights to LEDs.
