By the end of this year, the Silvis Police Department will move into a new building. Monday morning, city officials broke ground for a new headquarters near the Genesis Hospital Illini Campus.
Police Chief Mark VanKlavern says the current station has just 3,000 square feet and very little space for officers, dispatchers and other personnel.
The new building will have three times the space of the old one, that's now located downtown, on First Avenue at 11th Street.

Built in 1925, the old station is showing signs of age.
Construction will probably begin in about a month, and the new Silvis Police station could be finished by Christmas. The estimated cost is 2.5 million dollars.
