Hoping to keep the deer herd at a manageable size, the Scott County Conservation Board is preparing for the annual hunt in Scott County Park. Archery hunters can apply through August 1st, for the three-month season beginning in October.
Roger Kean, executive director of the conservation board, says the park covers about 12-hundred acres, and before the hunts started 21 years ago, there were an estimated 500 to 600 deer living in the park.
Now the herd numbers about 150, and Kean says the yearly hunt is held to maintain the herd at that level.
A maximum of 25 hunters will be allowed to kill up to two deer each.
