Mock Election

Iowa Secretary of State

While their parents go to the polls Tuesday, some students at Bettendorf High School will also cast ballots. Juniors and Seniors will participate in this year's mock election sponsored by the Iowa Secretary of State's office.

Cathy Ahrens, a social studies and government teacher, says this is the first time the school has participated.
Bettendorf High School students will only vote on the statewide races in Iowa - US Senate and House, governor, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, attorney general and secretary of agriculture.

Ahrens says ballots for the mock election will be available at a table in the school's commons area.

To be more "authentic," students have to ask for a ballot. They won't just be handed out in class.

This year, 67 high schools in Iowa will participate in the Student Mock Election - besides Bettendorf the list includes Bellevue and Bellevue Marquette, and Central High School in Dewitt.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
