World Series of Drag Racing Returns to Cordova

Cordova International Raceway

Champions from across the country will gather in northwest Illinois this weekend for the 67th Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts World Series of Drag Racing at the Cordova International Raceway.

President and General Manager Dominic Blasco says the "awesome lineup" of drivers and cars, that started in 1955, is due to Cordova's good timing and good location.

"This has been going on so long because next week is Indianapolis which is the biggest and probably the best drag race of the year. And all the pros are coming through the week before which is the week of the World Series and that's how we end getting them all."

And each year, except for last year when it was canceled due to the pandemic, it gives a big boost to the regional economy.

"All our surrounding businesses, all the way to the Quad Cities, the whole surrounding area depends on this event. It brings them lots of money, lots of people, and all the hotels are filled up."

Blasco says up to 20,000 people attend the World Series each year.

There'll be a variety of races and other events Friday and Saturday, with the featured professionals competing Friday night and Saturday night.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
