Walmart Will Not Come to Rock Island

Walmart says it will not build a new store in Rock Island. This afternoon, the company announced in a news release, it will not "pursue development of a new store" at the former Watch Tower Plaza on 11th Street.

The statement thanked the work of Mayor Dennis Pauley and the Rock Island City Council. Spokeswoman Delia Garcia says "We appreciate their support as we have worked through the conceptualization and complexities of a potential commercial development."

Rock Island first planned to bring Walmart to the city in 2012. The city has invested $15 million into the project, which included clearing the Watch Tower Plaza site and relocating multiple businesses.
