State Help for New Davenport YMCA

Scott County Family Y

The state of Iowa wants to help the Scott County Family YMCA build a new facility in downtown Davenport. Wednesday the Enhance Iowa Board approved a Community Attraction and Tourism grant for 500,000 dollars.

Last fall, the Y announced plans for the project, at the corner of 4th Street and River Drive, near the Quad City Times building.

Officials say the existing downtown Y, on Second Street at Gaines, is more than 50 years old, too small, and no longer meets the needs of its members.

Plans for the new YMCA include three floors, two swimming pools, a full-size gym, and an indoor track.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
