Free Tax Assistance for One More Month
In one month, income taxes are due, but there's a free program to help get them done. Volunteers with the United Way and VITA are helping people with their tax returns at several locations in the Quad Cities. VITA stands for "Volunteer Income Tax Assistance."
Karrie Abbott, from the United Way, says the annual program runs from the end of January until April 11th.
"United Way believes that every person deserves the opportunity to live their best life, and one of the ways we can make that happen is by making sure that the dollars that people have at their disposal can be stretched as far as possible. And so, by providing free tax services, as well as getting that tax return back in their pocket, it helps to make them more financially stable."
There are 15 locations to get free tax help, including Bettendorf, Clinton, Davenport, East Moline, Moline, Rock Island, Silvis, and Geneseo.
Abbott says people with incomes of $57,000 or less are eligible.
"I think the important thing about this program is that it is truly driven by volunteers. We have over 170 volunteers that are volunteering their time and go through training to be certified tax preparers. And so, we really couldn't do it without them, and we're thankful for the time they give to this program."
The process takes about an hour, and the schedule depends on where you make an appointment.
