Possible Change for King Center Board

submitted
/
Martin Luther King Center
Children relax during summer day camp at the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island, IL.

A major change for the King Center in Rock Island will be the subject of a community meeting Thursday night. The board of directors is considering changing the by-laws to permit non-residents of the city to serve on the board.

Executive director Jerry Jones says currently the 11 directors can only come from Rock Island, but the proposed change would allow up to three from elsewhere in the Quad Cities.

"The King Center is Rock Island-centric and priority is placed on Rock Island due to the support we receive from the city of Rock Island, and due to where we're located. Even though that's the case, Quad Citians outside of Rock Island utilize the facility so this'll be a great opportunity to have them represented and to utilize their skill sets to better the King Center itself."
Jones says people from other cities now account for up to half of the rentals for weddings and other special events, and about one-third of those participating in some of its programs.

The board has the power to make the change itself, but he says directors still wanted to find out what people think.

The community meeting begins at 6 pm, at the King Center (630 9th St., RI).

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
