Two Rivers YMCA Opens First Rock Island Office
The YMCA has opened its first facility in Rock Island. Monday, the Two Rivers YMCA held an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony for its new program office, at the King Center in Rock Island.
Strategic Initiatives Executive, Christy Filby says the YMCA serves 500 children each year in Rock Island, through after school programs. The Y has had a partnership with the Rock Island school district for 30 years, but this will be its first office in the city.
"About a year and a half ago, the Two Rivers YMCA board commissioned a Rock Island task force," Filby says. "And they've been looking at what needs to be done so we can better serve our community of Rock Island. And one of the things was we needed to have a physical presence to not only serve our current programs better, but provide greater capacity so we could expand services in Rock Island."
Filby says Two Rivers YMCA has had a long relationship with the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island. So, having an office at the center was a "perfect match."
She says two employees will work at the office daily.
Monday, Rock Island aldermen and city officials helped cut the ribbon on the Two Rivers YMCA's administration office.
