Colleagues Remember Joe Seng as Enthusiastic, Passionate & Fun

Family and friends will gather this week to remember Iowa State Senator Joe Seng who died last Friday. Dr. Seng was also a veterinarian who operated Saint Francis Veterinary Hospital on Fillmore Street in Davenport.

Dr. Fred Mulch from Whitehaven Veterinary Center, has known Seng for more than 30 years. He says Seng didn't worry very much about getting paid, and years ago offered  'round-the-clock services.

Mulch says last winter, Seng seemed to be doing well after surgery for a brain tumor. But his health began to decline in the spring. So Mulch helped out, performing surgeries at the pet hospital downtown. And in July, Seng's license to practice became inactive.

Davenport State Representative Cindy Winckler worked with Seng in the Iowa House for two years before he was elected to the state senate in 2002. She says they worked as a team, and he never failed to call her about issues affecting Davenport and the Quad Cities area.

One of the things I didn't have was experience with agriculture, and he never hesitated to do a little education along with efforts to move things forward. I know he was very adamant about some of the privacy issues, people coming onto farmers' land without permission.

Winckler also says Seng was just fun to be around, playing the accordian, and sometimes several other instruments all at the same time.

Visitation will be held Friday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport. The funeral will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral, followed by the burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Joe Seng was 69 years old.
