Adults Use Coloring Books to Reduce Stress

Carnegie-Stout Public Library

About 30 adults in Dubuque decided they needed some play time last night. The Carnegie-Stout Public Library held its first Adult Coloring session to help relieve stress.

Adult Services Librarian, Amy Muchmore, says adults may feel silly at first filling in the coloring sheets with colored pencils. But once you try it, you immediately feel the benefits.
She says being able to focus on one activity helps clear the mind, similar to meditation.

And the activity isn't new for adults. Muchmore says adult coloring has gained popularity over the past four years, and is common on social media sites, like Instagram.

The library provided the coloring materials, as well as tea and cookies. And, Muchmore says staff had to bring out extra tables and chairs because of the bigger-than-expected turn-out.

The Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque will offer another Adult Coloring session on September 24th. The program is free and open to all adults 18 and older.
