Big Bacon Bonanza

Churches United

Churches United has found what seems like an unlikely way to raise money for its homeless shelter, food pantries, and other programs. Saturday it will hold its Second Annual Big Bacon Bonanza.

Executive director, Anne Wachal, says at least twice the vendors will be on hand, and all are local. Four hundred tickets were sold last year, and she's hoping for up to 1,000 this year.

Also, attending the bacon festival this year as a "celebrity judge" will be Danielle Dimovski, also known as "Diva Q" from the Travel Channel show, "BBQ Crawl."

Wachal says bacon really seems to be taking off as an "attraction" across the country.

Non-profits are trying to find signature events to raise money.

The Second Annual Big Bacon Bonanza will be held Saturday at the River Center in Davenport, from 4 until 7 pm.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
