Summer Reading Kick Off: Sensory-Friendly Touch-a-Truck

Summer Reading Kick Off: Sensory-Friendly Touch-a-Truck
Are you ready to Level Up your summer? Join us as we kick off our annual Summer Reading Challenge and our amazing slate of summer programs for the whole family with Touch-a-Truck! Come see some of your favorite vehicles from the Davenport Fire, Police, Public Works Departments, our own OWL (Outreach Wheeled Library), and more! You’ll have the opportunity to see vehicles, check out the controls, and maybe even climb inside! While you're here, decorate our sidewalks with chalk and discover the history of some of these vehicles at the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center table. And don't forget to sign up for our Summer Reading Challenge!
Need a break from the excitement? Pop into the Fairmount Community Center for a sensory break and some quieter play with Parks & Recreation.
The Library recognizes that our large events can be challenging for some patrons and their families to attend and enjoy. Join us from 9:30 to 10:30am for a special sensory-friendly* version of our popular Touch-a-Truck event. During this portion, there will be no music or horns honking. If your family does not require a sensory-friendly experience, please join us between 10:30 and 12 instead.
*A sensory-friendly event is an event that is designed to be less sensory-stimulating and overwhelming. This approach often makes it easier for individuals who have sensory sensitivities, such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who are sensitive to things like noise, colors, sounds, and smells, to participate in social activities and community or professional events. -The Autism Services, Education, Resources, and Training Collaborative (ASERT)
