More than one year ahead of local elections, a candidate has entered the race for Rock Island County State's Attorney.

Calvin Dane, who currently serves as Assistant State's Attorney, announced his candidacy Tuesday at a news conference outside of the Rock Island County Justice Center. Dane says he wants to bring new ideas to the office.

"I'm running not only to prevent these needless lawsuits that raise our taxes, but also to reinvigorate the State's Attorney's office with fresh thinking, community focus, and a renewed commitment to our mission of justice for all."

As State's Attorney, Dane says he would allocate more resources towards aggressively prosecuting career criminals.

"We'll take a fundamental shift in our thinking and approach. Rather than business as usual, I'm going to focus our very limited resources on going after the career criminals instead of individual crimes. Let's focus on the 20 percent of criminals that create 80 percent of our problems in society."

Dane, a Rock Island native, has been working in the Rock Island County State's Attorney office since 2016.
