A new organization is giving Rock Island businesses a boost.

The Rock Island Downtown Alliance officially launched last Tuesday. Members wants to improve the downtown area and encourage investments in businesses.

Executive Director Jack Cullen says one way to do that is through a new grant program.

"What we're most excited about getting off the ground is a new capital improvement grant program for downtown business owners and building owners, a new 'Clean and Safe' program for the downtown area, as well as special business promotions for our small business owners to boost sales and visibility during the upcoming holiday season."

The alliance is funded by, and created to manage, Rock Island's Special Service Area.

"Property owners within the downtown Special Service Area boundaries are paying an additional property tax to go toward special services and programs to enhance the downtown area."

More information about the grants and services will be online at downtownrockisland.org.
