IL State Treasurer Candidate, Tom Demmer with IL State Senate Candidate Mike Thoms

Illinois should not tax retirement benefits. That's according to Rock Island Mayor Mike Thoms who's running for State Senate and State Treasurer candidate Tom Demmer.

The two Republicans held a news conference in Rock Island yesterday [WED].
Demmer is from Dixon and currently serves in the Illinois House.

Demmer says, "I think the people have spoken loud and clear, I'm running for treasurer to fight against those tax increases, to stand with the majority of Illinoisans, and to be the fiscal watchdog that the people of Illinois deserve.

Thoms and Demmer both note that 100,000 people left Illinois this past year, and blame it on high taxes and they worry that democrats that control state government might try to tax retirement benefits.

Thoms says there are alternatives to raise state revenue. "It can grow through people spending their money at the grocery store, buying gas, buying supplies for the home, buying homes. Let's build it that way versus taxing."

In the November election Thoms is running against Democrat Mike Halpin for State Senate District 36, and Demmer faces incumbent Democrat Mike Frerichs for State Treasurer.
