A local activist is running for mayor of Davenport. Athena Gilbraith will formally announce her candidacy on Saturday during the Quad Cities Juneteenth celebration at the former Lincoln school.

Gilbraith says she's known for her work in social justice and has been honored by the Quad Cities YWCA, winning its Race Against Racism award. She was recently inducted into the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame. And she has served with local organizations including the Davenport NAACP, Progressive Action for the Common Good, Scott County Democratic Party Central Committee, and Iowa Democratic Black Caucus.

She's worked in marketing as the editor of Women’s Edition Magazine Quad Cities and as Iowa's Regional Organizing Coordinator for Swing Left, a political action committee. Gilbraith is also the founder of a nonprofit called Take Back.

Current Mayor Mike Matson has already announced he's running for re-election.

Officially, Michelle's title for 28 years was WVIK News Editor. She did everything there is to do in the newsroom and whatever was needed around the radio station. She also served as Acting News Director from September 2023 - January 2024.
