The national election is quickly approaching, and so one of the area’s non-profits seeks to make and keep Quad Cities residents aware of the weight of their votes through the screening of an award-winning documentary. One Person, One Vote? will be shown by the Azubuike African American Council for the Arts at The Last Picture House in downtown Davenport.

2024 marks ten years since the Azubuike African American Council for the Arts was established. Their goals revolve around ensuring that the entire Quad Cities community remains educated and empowered through art, culture, and civic engagement. Most of their work is art-related and art-oriented.

One Person, One Vote? is a documentary that explores the complexities of the U.S. Electoral College, its history, and the lasting impact it continues to have on American democracy today. It has received critical acclaim and multiple accolades at various film festivals. One of the entries included in last year’s inaugural Pulling Focus Film Festival, an original program launched by the Council, the documentary was determined a winner by a jury of film-industry professionals.

With this showing, Gaye Burnett, the Council’s co-founder and current executive director, hopes to inspire the region’s residents to engage themselves civically, especially with the nearing of November 5th. She said screening the documentary will commend its creator and bring more attention to the value and importance of voting, celebrating the now-decade-old non-profit in the process.

“We don’t want to tell people how to vote, but in this election it’s very important to be civically active. We just thought it was timely to have [the film] as an offering during our tenth-year anniversary, and we wanted to celebrate the filmmaker and her accomplishment, and also enrich our community,” Burnett said.

The event takes place at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 20th, beginning with an opening reception at 3:00 p.m. Filmmaker Maximina Juson will be in attendance. Once the screening concludes, she will be available for an hour-long Q-and-A session. Though the event is free and open to the public, seating is limited, so RSVPing is highly recommended.
